What if this service shuts down

A fair question, and one most services answer with reassurance rather than an answer. Here is the honest position.

We use it ourselves

The people who run this have their own letters and their own check-ins in it. That is not a marketing line, it is the reason the service exists in the first place, and it is the reason it is not going to be quietly abandoned.

If something happened to us, the service would be maintained by others rather than switched off. The arrangement exists already, precisely because we are asking you to rely on it.

What no service can honestly promise

Nobody can promise you a website will outlive you. Servers fail, domains lapse, companies close. Any service telling you otherwise is selling certainty it does not have.

What can be promised is that you will not be caught out. If the service were going to stop, notice would go out well in advance, with enough time to move everything somewhere else or to print it.

Your exit route

Nothing here is designed to trap you. Your letters and files are yours, and you can copy them out at any time without asking.

Why this is worth reading before you commit

A check-in service sits in an awkward place. It is meant to work at the moment you are least able to check on it, which means you have to be able to rely on it without watching it.

So the useful question is not whether a service will last forever. It is what happens if it does not, and how much notice you would get. That is the part we can answer.

If you want to reduce the risk further

  1. Keep a copy of anything that matters outside the service, on paper or on a drive you control.
  2. Tell one person that the arrangement exists, so that if the service vanished they would know to ask about it.
  3. Do not put anything in a letter that would be catastrophic if it were never delivered, and do not use it as the only copy of a key or a password.
